Chiharu Shiota: Absence embodied

23 August 2018 – 2019

Chiharu Shiota : Embodied

23 August – 28 October 2018

A leading international artist, Chiharu Shiota has a longstanding relationship with Australia, dating back to a seminal experience as an exchange student at the Australian National University’s Canberra School of Art, in 1993–94. It was in Australia that she had a breakthrough moment which led to her signature ‘thread installations’, a period in her practice that has rarely been studied in depth, until now. In August 2018 the Art Gallery of South Australia will present the first major solo survey exhibition in Australia of Chiharu Shiota’s work. Beginning as autobiographical excavations, her installations draw on personal experiences and emotions to create universally resonant works. Through significant loans from the artist and private and public lenders in Germany, Japan and Australia, this exhibition will explore Shiota’s early performance pieces, captured through her photographs, drawings and moving image works. The centrepiece of this exhibition will be a major commissioned acquisition for the collection featuring Shiota’s iconic string practice. A unique drawing in space, this truly immersive work will use kilometres of red wool and feature new sculptural elements. The work Absence Embodied, the only large-scale permanent installation of Shiota’s work in a public institution in Australia, will be realised in the historic Melrose Wing.

Edo Style: Art of Japan (1615-1868)

5 September – 1 December 2018

The David Roche Foundation, Adelaide

The relative peace and prosperity of the Edo period (1615-1868) fostered a flourishing of art and culture in expansive urban centres in Japan which were inhabited by style conscious urbanites. The pleasure and diversions of the floating world of Edo will be on display, captured in woodblock prints, folding screens and hanging scrolls amongst a wealth of ceramics, lacquer and sculptures. Edo style includes over 70 works of art on loan from the collection of the Art Gallery of South Australia and private lenders as well as a comprehensive public programs schedule.
