AJA 2018 AGM Report

The 2018 Annual General Meeting and Dinner was held at the Ginza Miyako Japanese Restaurant on Wednesday, August 22.

Special guests included the Hon. Jing Lee MLC, Minister assisting the Premier, as speaker, Mr Yoshimitsu Kawata, Deputy Japanese Consul-General, and Mr Adam Wynn, Hon. Consul-General for Japan in Adelaide. The Kimono Choir, Kyoko Katayama and Yoko Kishimoto, entertained the meeting with some lovely Japanese songs.

In the business section of the meeting the Minutes from the 2017 AGM, which had been circulated to all financial members, were accepted as correct, as was the Treasurer’s Report, which recorded a loss for the year July 1 2017 to June 30 2018, due mainly to expenses involved in the 50th Anniversary celebrations.

Outgoing President Jim Stewart reported on the activities of the past year, referring to Kaiwa Club meetings, the Caffé Amore as a big factor in AJA’s success, participation in multicultural community events like the Moon Lantern Festival and the Australia Day Parade and the importance of willing volunteers in these events and at the Burnside Japanese Cultural Day. He also commended Jason Davies as someone who would do great job as the next President of AJA. The full President’s Report can be seen on the AJA website.

The new AJA of SA Committee for 2018-19 was elected, and in alphabetical order are Mia Chamberlain, Jason Davies, Kyoko Katayama, Ian Loxton, Stuart McClure, Kanoko Oura, Sergio Palacio, Jim Stewart and Sue Treloar. All committee members will share various roles, such as membership, event coordinating, and communication, but the Executive will be President Jason, Vice-President: Kyoko; Secretary Jim; Treasurer, Sue, and Public Officer Stuart.]

In a special ceremony Kyoko Katayama was presented with Life Membership and Sue Treloar with an Outstanding Service Award. Tatsuhiko Sakai, now retired from the committee, will be presented an award on his return from Japan.

At the closing of the AGM Jim as MC thanked the management and staff of the Miyako Japanese Restaurant for their support and service, having hosted the AJA of SA for the 5th year, and also all guests for their attendance at this 51st AGM.
